Should a lung cancer screening program proposed this month include non-smokers too?

When Danielle Curnoe tells people she has lung cancer, she is frequently asked if she was a smoker.

"Really, really pisses me off when people ask that question," Ms Curnoe said.

Ms Curnoe has stage-four lung cancer, and has never smoked in her life.

But people assume she brought it on herself, she said.

"If I tell people, I tend to say I've got stage-four cancer, I don't say lung cancer," Ms Curnoe said.

Stephanie Lake’s journey from dancer to leading Australian choreographer climaxes with Colossus, Manifesto and Sydney Dance Company’s The Universe Is Here

When most future Australian dancers were in pre-ballet classes, Stephanie Lake was leaping around her family's basement wearing leotards, and roping her siblings into performances for their parents; when the choreographers who are now her peers were graduating to the barre and strapping on their first pointe shoes, she was ice-skating in the prairies of Canada, where she lived until the age of eight.

Even after the family moved to Launceston, Tasmania, it wasn't until Lake's mid-teens that she began taking dance classes, and it wasn't until 19 that she learnt any form of ballet technique.

By dance standards, this made her an extremely late bloomer — and in many ways, a square peg in a relatively round-hole discipline.

Dominic Perrottet asked to see shortlist for UK trade job despite previously denying involvement

A parliamentary inquiry has revealed that when NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet was treasurer he asked to examine the candidates for the UK agent-general role even though someone had already been selected.

The Upper House inquiry into the controversial appointment of former deputy premier John Barilaro as the US senior trade and investment commissioner (STIC) resumed today and is now also examining the state's other overseas postings.

Paul Webster, the current trade and investment commissioner to the UK and Europe, gave evidence from London.

He was originally deemed the preferred candidate for the agent-general role in 2020, but the job ended up going to Stephen Cartwright, who was a late entry to the process.

Future unclear for Sydney Dogs and Cats Home shelter after government funding request denied

Every week hundreds of people are calling the Sydney Dogs and Cats Home animal shelter to surrender their pets.

The shelter says the reported surge in surrenders is putting pressure on the services they provide in eight different councils in the city.

General manager Melissa Penn says this is happening because of the cost of living crisis and workers returning to the office after a growth in pet ownership during the pandemic.
