Australia urged to stop selling weapons to countries accused of war crimes

Human rights groups say it is “unthinkable” that Australia has been secretly exporting arms to the war-ravaged Democratic Republic of Congo and other countries whose militaries have been consistently accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The Guardian revealed on Tuesday that the Australian government had approved the export of weapons to the Democratic Republic of Congo four times in 2018-19. It has also issued more than 80 weapons export permits to Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.

The parched legacy of drought in Murrurundi, an Australian town with beer but no water

It's 8 p.m. at the Royal Hotel in Murrurundi and the mercury is hovering at around 42 degrees Celsius (107F). After a sweltering day, the locals are gathering at their favorite watering hole -- in a town that has no water.

With much of the surrounding state of New South Wales ablaze, Murrurundi represents another crisis wrought by Australia's nightmare summer. Drought has claimed thousands of acres of land across southeastern Australia, the most populous quadrant of the country, and where the lion's share of its agriculture is based.

Australian academic Kylie Moore-Gilbert begs Scott Morrison to help get her out of Iranian jail

The imprisoned British-Australian academic Kylie Moore-Gilbert has begged the Australian prime minister to secure her release from an Iranian jail, as human rights groups urge foreign governments to take a stronger line with Tehran.

Jeanswest collapses into administration putting nearly 1,000 jobs at risk

Clothing chain Jeanswest has collapsed into administration, joining the ranks of Australian-based retailers that have succumbed to sluggish consumer spending in recent weeks.

The retailer, which employs 988 people and has 146 stores around Australia, is known for its range of denim and casualwear.

KPMG confirmed on Wednesday it had appointed voluntary administrators Peter Gothard and James Stewart to conduct an urgent analysis of the business’s finances.

Jeanswest will continue to operate while a buyer for the business is found.

The Australian brand has been challenged by current tough market conditions and pressure from online competition, Stewart said in a statement.

As Fires Rage, Australia Pushes to Emit More Carbon

Australia's catastrophic brush fire season comes as the country continues to insist on a climate loophole that critics say would undermine the Paris Agreement's objective of keeping global warming to relatively safe levels.

The fires that began in September were the result of record heat and drought that scientists say is consistent with climate change — and likely to worsen if the world misses its chance this decade to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Blazes in New South Wales and other states so far have killed 20 people and up to half a billion animals, leading to fear of extinctions.

Australian couple returns 'home' to find smoking ruin where their house once stood

Field after field of charred trees line a dirt road leading deep into the Australian bush, west of the coastal New South Wales town of Eden.

For days, access to this area has been restricted by authorities who manned roadblocks that fire chiefs warned were too dangerous to cross.

Bushfires have raged across several Australian states for months, but high temperatures and strong winds have pushed the danger level to "severe" in the past week.
Huge blazes have edged closer to towns, national parks and the pockets of dense bushland that people had cleared for their homes.

Australia bushfire crisis: UNICEF offers help and support

Flagging its experience in providing crucial long-term support to children across the world through the three stages of relief, recovery and rehabilitation, UNICEF expressed it “very real desire” to assist Australia.

“UNICEF has significant expertise and experience globally in responding to emergencies, including natural disasters”, the statement said. “From decades of work with millions of people around the world, we know that children are always among the most vulnerable in circumstances such as these”.

Australian Open 2020: What the Australia fires mean for the tennis tournament in Melbourne

The bushfires currently raging in eastern Australia have raised fears the start of the Australian Open could be delayed.

Thirty thousand square miles of land have been engulfed by flames since bushfire season began weeks earlier than usual in September, with many of the 200 active fires located in the south-eastern states of Victoria, home to Melbourne Park, and neighbouring New South Wales.

Although reduced temperatures and increased rainfall over the weekend led to the repeal of all emergency warnings and the reduction of those in NSW to the lowest alert level, officials warned on Sunday that temperatures are set to return to over 40C by Thursday.

Bushfire insurance claims could top $600m

Insurance claims for property losses this bushfire season could easily double to top $600 million, with about 1300 homes razed so far across NSW, Victoria, South Australia and Queensland since late August and as blazes continue to rage across four states.
However, the true cost will be much higher, with many of those to have lost property likely to be underinsured or have no insurance at all.
Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons says 382 homes have been destroyed along the NSW South Coast.

Why Southeast Asian real estate markets remain attractive to Chinese investors

In recent years, China’s government has been sticking to the principle that houses are used for living in and not for speculation, thus imposing restrictions on domestic real estate transactions by means of limited purchase, property tax, and higher lending rates.

This has pushed China’s home buyers and investors to shift their attention to overseas real estate markets. As a result, China replaces the US and as the world’s largest source of cross-border real estate investors, according to the 2019 H1 Global Cross-Border Real Estate Investment Data Report released by uoolu.com.

Australian home prices end year with strongest quarter gains since 2009

AUSTRALIAN home prices ended 2019 with the biggest quarterly rise in a decade, a remarkable return to boom from bust that promises to support consumer wealth and, perhaps, spending.

Data from property consultant CoreLogic out on Thursday showed that home prices across the nation rose 1.1 per cent in December, from November when they climbed 1.7 per cent.

That brought the gains for the three months to December to 4 per cent, the steepest rise since late 2009 and a world away from the punishing declines seen earlier in the year.
