Fog blankets Sydney as smoke haze continues to linger

Smoke from hazard reduction burns settled across Sydney and southern NSW on Monday morning ahead of forecast wet weather which could suspend planned burns “for some time”.

The NSW Rural Fire Service issued a smoke advisory around 6.30am for Greater Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, Snowy Valleys, Southern Highlands and Illawarra/Shoalhaven.

Virgin Australia drops $39 flights between Sydney and Melbourne

Virgin Australia has slashed the price of fares for their popular Sydney-Melbourne service, with flights going for a record-low $39.

The discounted seats are available for select travel dates between now and December 15, 2021, available to purchase for a limited time or until flights are sold.

A Virgin Australia spokesperson said the airline was committed to offering customers some of the "most competitive airfares in the market".

REX BECKONS RIVALS TO MATCH ITS $39 SYDNEY–MELBOURNE SALE

Rex announced on Monday it would sell tickets between Sydney and Melbourne for $39 – and then predicted its rivals would rush to copy its deal.

“I believe this initiative will singlehandedly revive a moribund travel and hospitality industry in the two cities,” Rex’s deputy chairman John Sharp said. “The resulting copycat moves from our competitors will mean that there will be hundreds of thousands of $39 fares available.”

It marks the most aggressive move yet in the sales wars between airlines rebuilding their networks, which previously saw Virgin rush to match Rex’s $49 offer in hours.
