Man arrested over alleged murder of Sydney woman Dannielle Finlay-Jones

A man wanted over the alleged murder of a Sydney woman has been arrested after a near-12 hour stand-off with New South Wales Police in the Blue Mountains.

Dannielle Finlay-Jones, 31, was found with serious head injuries at a Cranebrook home in Sydney's west on Sunday.

She could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Earlier, police announced they were searching for 33-year-old Ashley Gaddie in connection with the alleged killing.

Spokesman Peter Khoury said the number of call-outs for incidents related to potholes in New South Wales had almost doubled compared to this time last year.

"We are seeing a significant increase for people who have damaged their tyres or their wheels," he said.

According to the NRMA, the total number of call-outs in NSW for July and August last year was 14,441.

Animal rescuers race to reach pets, livestock stranded in Sydney floods

Animal rescuers are working around the clock to rescue and care for pets and livestock caught in floodwaters in western Sydney.

Using a boat to access the parts of the Hawkesbury region under water, Crisis Animal Response and Evacuation NSW (CARE NSW) has rescued kangaroos, dogs, horses, and delivered food and supplies to stranded cows.

"They're freezing, hypothermic, and probably a little bit in shock too," said animal rescuer Josh Robinson.

Greater glider listed as endangered, as climate change and logging threatens species

Conservationists have renewed calls for an end to native forest logging as Australia's largest gliding mammal, the greater glider, has been listed as endangered.

The federal government has moved the species from a vulnerable to endangered listing at a national level.

More than 30 per cent of the southern and central greater gliders' habitat was lost during the Black Summer bushfires and the species has remained vulnerable to logging and a warming climate.

Climate expert says NSW government should buy Sydney homes left 'uninhabitable' by floods

Flood waters have inundated Judy White's home in north-west Sydney three times in four months.

The Nepean River, which peaked at 16.61 metres on Sunday, rose past the top of her front door in Londonderry on Sunday.

"I've had this place for 12 months ... I didn't even make it to nine months. People don't understand unless they've been through it," she said.

The New South Wales Water Minister says an impractical rule that has increased flooding risks on a number of occasions "needs to change" urgently, but a missed deadline means it will be at least another 12 months before it is fixed.

A rule in the Water Sharing Plan for the Macquarie and Cudgegong Regulated Rivers Water Source 2016 legislation has on numerous occasions seen water automatically released out of a half-full Windamere Dam, near Mudgee, while the region's water systems are already experiencing flood conditions.

On Sunday, water was released out of Windamere into an already inundated Cudgegong River for five hours, at a time Mudgee roads were flooded, properties were saturated, and rivers were full.

Sydney flood crisis expected to worsen fruit and vegetable price hike

Soaring vegetable prices could be here to stay for some time, with the New South Wales flood crisis just the latest in a round of hits driving grocery bills sky-high.

In Camden, on the south-western outskirts of Sydney, vegetable producer Paul Grech said his crop of cabbages and baby spinach had been "wiped out" by the swollen Nepean River.

It is the third flood to hit his farm this year, washing away an estimated $1 million in turnover.

"You don't get anything after a flood," he said.

ACTU Secretary Sally McManus says the Reserve Bank is out of touch and living in "boomer fantasy land" if it thinks workers can afford real cuts to their wages.

The union boss said the RBA governor Philip Lowe changed his tune in his speech earlier this week about wages.

"He was the one who said that so long as wages keep up with inflation and productivity, they're not inflationary," she told RN Breakfast.

On Tuesday, Dr Lowe warned pay rises above 3.5 per cent, which is half the 7 per cent inflation forecast by the end of the year, could force the RBA to go harder on interest rates and prolong high inflation.

South Coast council begs holiday-home owners to rent out properties as housing crisis escalates

A coastal New South Wales council is begging 7,500 holiday home owners from Canberra and Sydney to make their properties available to renters to ease the region's housing crisis.

Eurobodalla Shire Council Mayor Mathew Hatcher has written to a total of about 8,000 non-resident ratepayers who own homes along the South Coast, urging them to consider renting them out for one to two years while long-term solutions can be established.

"We know that a lot of Canberrans, and I was one of them, use this area as their holiday destination every summer," Councillor Hatcher said.

"And there's no doubt about it, we want you down here, we need your money, we need you to be a tourist for this region.

Fowler independent Dai Le insists she is eligible to sit in parliament

The watchdog will investigate if the councillors "dishonestly exercised their official functions" in exchange for gifts and benefits, including flights and accommodation for overseas trips, from 2014 until last year.

Power prices to surge up to 18.3 per cent as energy market turmoil flows through to households

Millions of Australian households are set to be hit by soaring electricity costs after the energy industry watchdog increased key prices by hundreds of dollars a year.

Star Casino manager 'disappeared' after allegedly transferring $13m into his account, inquiry told

A key figure in Star Casino's international VIP team is accused of misappropriating more than $13 million in gambling money before "disappearing" in 2020, an inquiry has heard.

The senior manager, who worked with Chinese high rollers, allegedly transferred a $13.3 million payment from a junket operator into his own account, rather than the Star's.

Proposed NSW government planning changes to rubber stamp development, councils warn

Witnesses to Sydney Royal Easter Show fatal stabbing urged to hand over footage

Police say witnesses of the fatal stabbing of a teenager at the Sydney Royal Easter Show could be staying silent over "misguided loyalty".

Uati ‘Pele’ Felatolu, 17, who worked for one of the show's ride operators, was stabbed in the chest last week in front of stunned onlookers, during a brawl between two groups.

Husband of Melissa Caddick stakes claim to a share of the millions she owned in property, luxury cars and jewellery

Melissa Caddick's husband is trying to claw back some of the millions in property, cars, jewellery and designer clothes owned by the Sydney fraudster.

Anthony Koletti, who married Ms Caddick in 2013, submitted a statement to the Federal Court on Tuesday claiming his financial contribution to the household over 2017-2020 meant he was entitled to a cut of his wife's assets.

These include two homes in Dover Heights and Edgecliff worth an estimated $20 million, Ms Caddick's Gucci wedding dress and various pieces of jewellery together worth more than $95,000.

Sydney property development with no sewerage connection turns dream into nightmare

It started as a dream but aspiring home owners Matt Pyatt and Michael Buckingham say it has become a nightmare.

The couple bought a land package as part of a new development in Sydney's south-west in February 2020.

More than two years later, the block remains vacant.

The reason? Sewerage.

The lots are still not connected to a wastewater network and that means no work can begin.

Mr Pyatt and Mr Buckingham have already had to pull out of a contract with their builder because of the delays — something they say has cost about $10,000.

Former Australian Test cricketer Stuart MacGill has pleaded not guilty to stalking and intimidating a Sydney bar owner three weeks ago.

The ex-spin bowler, 51, was unable to attend the Downing Centre in Sydney this morning because he is self-isolating after testing positive for COVID-19.

Police say Mr MacGill and another man verbally abused Samantha Ford — licensee of The Argyle in The Rocks — outside a home and then a bar on Kent Street at Millers Point on February 1.

After handing himself into Day Street Police Station on Friday, Mr MacGill was charged with intimidating and using offensive language in a public place.

NSW marine authorities have upped the ante in its fight against illegal fishing and black market sales on Sydney's waters.

Despite NSW Fisheries seizing about 50,000 illegally caught fish and invertebrates in NSW each year, authorities said it was not enough to curb the rise in unlawful activity.

Operation Ascend, a "high profile compliance exercise" using two high-tech Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPV), began in Sydney Harbour in December.

It has already intercepted hundreds of boats since it began, detecting 83 offences, some of them major.
